Our Christmas Tree 2008

This year, we made it a special afternoon event to decorate the tree. Along with a buffet of  hot chocolate, apple cider and panettone, we spent a lazy Sunday afternoon hanging up the Christmas lights and reminiscing over the different ornaments that we've collected over the years (some were hand-made years ago!). During the last week, we've all been wrapping, wrapping and wrapping gifts to tuck under and around the adorned tree. Here's a picture of this holiday tradition taken on Christmas Eve.

What's on your wishlist? Part 3 of 3

Gift Challenge: The person I need gift suggestions for is... me. My husband needs to have some ideas for what to get me and I simply don't know what to say. I'm a stay at home mom with 2 small children. I'm not really into beauty products or spa treatments and I don't like to get things I would normally buy for myself (like clothes, kitchen stuff although I do like to cook and I love pretty things of all kinds). Books are ok but I'd prefer to get something more unique from my husband. But he is so frustrated without any suggestions! I'd love jewelry of almost any kind but our limit is probably $100-150 and less would be better. Can you help me come up with some ideas to give him?

You are not the first person to let me know this week that it's hard to come up with a wishlist for yourself. Here are some suggestions, see what you think and if you like them, just forward onto your husband. He will be very happy to buy you something you want.

Pretty Gadgets for the Kitchen

Nesting Mixing Bowls: $59.95

Appetizer Platters: $69.95

Appetizer Party Serving Set: $39.95

Cabana Storage Containers: $32.00

Essential tools for gift wrapping

So these past few days I've been wrapping, wrapping and wrapping more presents. Early in the morning, when it's quiet and I'm still half asleep is the best time to wrap presents (the worst being 20 mins before your guests arrive on Dec 24th!). Here are a couple of essentials that will help you make the most of your time. Stop by your local convenient store, stationary shop or craft supplies store for these goods:

Basics:
1) Wrapping paper: 4 rolls
2) Tissue wrapping paper for odd sized items: 2 packets
3) Scissors or 3m's fantastic gift wrap cutter: really a must have if you have more than 10 gifts
4) Ruler: to help you save paper and accurately size each sheet of wrapping
5) Tape: 3 rolls
6) Self-adhesive To and From labels: 2 packets

Embellishments:
1) Satin ribbon: 3 rolls
2) Tinsel: 1 roll
3) Sparkly white wool: 1 ball

Gift Challenge: It's my niece's sweet sixteen coming up in a few weeks right before Christmas. I'd like to get her something nice - significant but not too serious... She loves accessories - earrings, necklaces... and is always out diving and surfing. Do you have any suggestions?

This may be a sweet surprise for her birthday/Christmas present. It's an adorable fish pendant made with 18 carat white gold and two sparkly diamonds. She can wear it anywhere, anytime but it's definitely a special gift. Available at mblife.com.

Harney & Son Fine Teas

After every visit to a spa, I bring home a couple packets of the teas they offer. This morning I'm enjoying a cup of Japanese Sencha by Harney & Sons.

Three things about tea gifts that are critical: flavor, quality of the sachet and of course the overall packaging. This particular one satisfies all the criteria with rich flavor, a silken sachet (no staples!) and delicate packets for individual servings. It makes for a great gift for tea lovers and also a very elegant treat for anyone on your gift list. Available at HarneyandSons.com.

6 Tips to Keep Track of Your Budget + Everyone on Your list

It's very nerdy, yes. But this is the only way to keep track of everyone, every dollar and ensure that every surprise gets delivered on time. Here's an excel template that will help you manage your gift list.

1) Grand Total: Easily and quickly keep track of the grand total.
Here's the formula: = SUM(G4:G300), don't forget the equal sign. This will automatically add together all the totals in column G.

2) Bought? Keep track of what you have bought.
Just simply write yes or no under the Bought column. You can also add a filter on row 3 (Data>Filter>Autofilter) to show only items that are not yet filled.

3) People: Who are you shopping for?
Avoid getting duplicate gifts or missing gifts by making a list of everyone you will see this holiday. You can also add a couple lines for "anyone" or generic gifts for surprise guests.

4) Where? Take note of where to buy it at the best price.
If you've spent hours looking for the best gift don't forget to note it. This way, you can easily go back and add all the items to cart and check out once and qualify for free shipping.

5) Price and Quantity: How much and how many?
Keep precise tabs on how much you a spending, 5 cents here and 10 cents there do add up. Also, keep track of the quantity. If you are buying towels or wine glasses, you may want to double or triple the quantity or buy a couple sets for various different recipients.

6) Total: Get an idea of how much.
Here's the formula: = E4*F4 (don't forget the equal sign). Once you've entered the formula into the first cell, just select it and drag your mouse down the column to auto fill the rest.

How do you manage your gift budget? Leave a comment or email me.
